Job Overview

The Lab Assistant role at GEMS American Academy is pivotal in supporting the Science faculty by managing laboratory operations and ensuring a safe and efficient learning environment. In this dynamic environment, you will be responsible for preparing experiments, maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations, and assisting students with their individual laboratory investigations. The Lab Assistant will also play a crucial role in inventory management and ensuring the proper disposal of hazardous materials, contributing to a culture of safety and responsibility within the school.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the science laboratories, ensuring all equipment, tools, chemicals, and materials are adequately stocked and functional.
• Assist in maintaining compliance with health and safety standards in the laboratory environment.
• Prepare for experiments and practical demonstrations by gathering necessary solutions, instruments, and materials.
• Monitor inventory levels and facilitate the ordering and receipt of chemicals, equipment, and consumables.
• Prepare chemical solutions of specified concentrations as required for experiments.
• Ensure availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) for students during lab activities.
• Maintain cleanliness in laboratory and prep rooms post-experiments, including cleaning glassware and disposing of chemical waste safely.
• Conduct regular inventories of chemicals and laboratory equipment.
• Participate as a member of the school’s Health & Safety committee.
• Ensure proper storage of chemicals in designated cabinets and keep safety data sheets (SDS) updated.
• Perform risk assessments related to the handling and preparation of hazardous substances.
• Assist IB students with their Internal Assessments by preparing necessary equipment and materials.
• Support students in their individual laboratory investigations as needed.
• Maintain records of essential documents related to laboratory operations, including safety data sheets, risk assessments, and waste disposal logs.
• Perform additional duties as required by the department.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Minimum of one year’s experience in a laboratory assistant role or similar environment.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with staff and students.
• Detail-oriented, organized, and a proactive team player.
• A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preferred.
• Knowledge of health and safety regulations related to laboratory work.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
